Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association

Las Vegas, Nevada

The following is the BLM Bird List for the Las Vegas District - not just the Conservation Area.

Located in southern Nevada, the Las Vegas District of the Bureau of Land Management includes Clark, southern Nye and Lincoln counties. Plant communities in this 7 million acre public area range from desert scrub to pine forest. Both Mohave and Great Basin desert habitats are represented.

Bird life is varied. Waterfowl and shorebirds are found in association with the Colorado River system, the Pahranagat and Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuges (managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), and the Overton Wildlife Management Area (managed by the Nevada Department of Wildlife).

Bird watchers are often surprised to see birds common to northern climates in isolated desert mountain ranges. Southern Nevada hosts many wintering bird species from northern areas.

The following bird list contains 353 species which have been recorded in the district.  General habitat types where a species is most likely to occur are indicated by:

A - aquatic
Ac - accidental
C - cliffs, canyons
Ch - chaparral, brush

G - groves, thicket
0 - open, fields, deserts, grasslands
R - riparian

Sa-sagebrush

Sh - shores, beaches, flats

T - town
W - woodlands
Wi - widespread
* - introduced

Birds italicized are federally listed as threatened or endangered, or are candidate species for threatened or endangered status.

This list was compiled with cooperative assistance from the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the Red Rock Audubon Society.
