Red Rock Photo Contest ~ 2008

Theme:   Nature and Wildlife of Red Rock Canyon

Rules: (For information call Gina Mele at 515-5355 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM)  The Contest is sponsored by Friends of Red Rock and the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.

1.  WHEN AND WHERE TO ENTER

Entries will be accepted at the Lloyd D. George Federal Building, 333 Las Vegas Boulevard South, on the following two days ONLY:  Friday October 3, and Saturday, October 4, 2008, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Entries will NOT be accepted at any other time.

2.  HOW TO ENTER

Entries will be received on a first come, first served basis; NO more than 150 photo entries per category will be accepted.  To ensure participation in the contest, please email Vicki Sudduth (vsudduth@friendsofredrockcanyon.org) to be placed on the participation list or register on-line at http://www.friendsofredrockcanyon.org

Entry fees:   Adults:  $5.00 per entered photo    ~     Teens:  $3.00 per entered photo    ~     Children (ages 3-12):  $3.00 per entered photo

Fees will only be accepted with submission of prints during the above designated time frame. 

There is a maximum of four entries per person.

No personal checks will be accepted.  Entry fees may be paid with cash, money order, or major credit cards.

 

3.  EXHIBIT OF PHOTOS

All photo entries will be on display at the Lloyd D. George Federal Building, 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South (between Bridger and Clark Avenues), from October 6, 2008 to December 5, 2008. Winning entries might be displayed at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center if space is available.    

 

4. AWARDS

Ribbons and/or Cash Awards will be presented to eligible (winning) entries.

 

5. CATEGORIES AND AWARDS

A.  Nature (Color) - First Place $100; Second Place $50; Third Place $25

B.  Wildlife (Color) - First Place $100; Second Place $50; Third Place $25

C.  Creative Nature/Wildlife (see below) - First Place $100; Second Place $50; Third Place $25

The Creative Category allows any alteration of normal photograph procedures.  Please have elements in this category pertaining to Red Rock Canyon.

D.  Children (12 and under) Nature/Wildlife - First Place $25; Second Place $15; Third Place $10

Color Only - other photos will be judged in the Adult Category

E.  Teen (13 - 19 yrs) Nature/Wildlife - First Place $50; Second Place $25; Third Place $15

Color Only - other photos will be judged in the Adult Category

F.  General Nature/Wildlife (Black and White) - First Place $100; Second Place $50; Third Place $25

 

6. AWARDS RECEPTION

A reception will be given for the winners with the date to be announced.

 

7. RETURN OF PHOTOS

The winners will be notified by phone or mail no later than mid-October.  The eighteen main winners could be displayed at the Red Rock Visitor Center in December if space is available. All other photo entries must be picked up at the Lloyd D. George Federal Building from 9 AM to 4 PM on Friday, December 5, 2008 and Saturday, December 6, 2008.  If photos are not picked up during the listed times and dates, they will become the property of the Bureau of Land Management, Friends of Red Rock Canyon, and the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association to use as they deem appropriate.

 

 

8. JUDGING 

Prints will be judged by several photographic judges.  The decision of the judges is final.   

 

Photo Requirements

  1. All entries must be approximately 8"x10" or 8”x 12” with a mat and frame size of 11" x 14". The mat color is optional.  No loose prints will be accepted.  Prints not in accordance with the above will be disqualified.

  2. All photographic prints must be framed in plain glass with the frame and mat of your choice.  Secure wiring, aligned properly to the back of photo, must be attached for hanging purposes. Total framed print size must not exceed 11" x 14".

  3. The theme of this contest is Nature/Wildlife. Nature/Wildlife photography consists of plants and wildlife of Red Rock Canyon, Red Rock scenery, and the Cultural Resources of Red Rock Canyon.  Human elements, if present, should be unobtrusive or enhance the nature story. All people present in photos should be in hiking or rock climbing attire only and be completely unidentifiable.

  4. Photos must be original and taken by the entrant in approximately the last three years. No names are allowed on the front of the photo prints. No recycling of winning or non-winning photos is allowed.

  5. The Bureau of Land Management, Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, Friends of Red Rock Canyon, and the staff of the Lloyd D. George Federal Building are not responsible for lost or damaged photo entries.

  6. All entrants agree to allow their photographs to be displayed and/or published by the Bureau of Land Management, Friends of Red Rock Canyon, or the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association without a fee.

  7. The Children’s category is for ages 3-12. Ages 13-19 will be entered in the "Teen Nature/Wildlife" category.

  8. No mail-in entries will be accepted.

  9. Photo entry titles will not be a factor in judging. 

  10. There are no age restrictions in the creative or black and white categories.  All prints will be judged equally.

  11. Entries not in accordance with the above specifications may be displayed but will be ineligible for judging and awards.

  12. Photo Entrants turning in photos on Friday, October 3, 2008 must use metered parking or park at a casino garage.  This may also be the case on Saturday, October 4, 2008 unless the employee parking in front of stairs is available.

  13. There must be a minimum of 10 entrants per category to receive a cash award.  Ribbons will be given out regardless of number of entrants.
