During fall, hike back into any of the canyon areas and you’ll notice the tiny golden flowers of chinchweed (Pectis papposa) carpeting the desert floor. These low-lying annual flowers, growing no taller than eight inches, have a spicy & zesty odor and bloom during autumn after late-summer rains. Native Americans within the southwest used chinchweed as food, laxative, and perfume.
