Red Rock Canyon A to Z

A: Antelope Ground Squirrel

Hey look, it is a chipmunk! Just kidding. Pictured here is a white-tailed antelope ground squirrel, Ammospermophilus leucurus.  This small mammal, about the size of a tennis ball, gets its name by holding its white tail vertically up while running around, similar to how pronghorn antelope act. You can spot these animals normally in gravelly areas looking for fruits and seeds, but they’re also spotted around our visitor center and picnic areas looking for food. As cute as they are you certainly do not want to feed them because they’ll bite.
