Wildlife Wednesday

Cactus wrens (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) are champions when it comes to using the harsh desert landscape to their advantage. While hiking at Red Rock Canyon, you may often spot clusters of dry stems and grasses perched inside the branches of cholla cacti. These clusters are actually cactus wren nests! Inside are small tunnels where you can find them roosting or incubating eggs. This precarious nest position on top of sharp cactus branches helps protect the bird and its young from any predators. These birds are commonly spotted throughout all of Red Rock Canyon.
