Wildlife Wednesday

While spending time near springs and seeps at Red Rock Canyon, you may see and hear red-spotted toads (Anaxyrus punctatus). These animals, getting no bigger than three inches in length, blend in with the desert floor thanks to their effective camouflage patterns. That said, you can normally find small red to orange warts on these particular toads. They feed on a variety of small insects and lay their eggs in a big cluster underwater from spring through fall. A variety of birds, snakes, and mammals feed on red-spotted toads as they play an important part in the food-web.
