C: Cholla

Be aware of spiky cholla cacti, Cylindropuntia spp., while hiking! These plants easily attach themselves to wildlife and hikers with their barbed spines. This is how they spread their seeds and populate the desert! If you do find yourself stuck with cholla, work a comb or stick in-between the cactus stem and your clothing and flick it away. In late spring, you can often see vibrant yellow, orange, and green flowers growing on the ends of the cactus. Cholla can be spotted all throughout Red Rock Canyon.
