If you have ever wanted to hike confidently alone, this program is for you!! Get helpful hints and tricks for hitting the trails on your own. Hiking 101 runs 8:00 – 11:00 am and requires registration at:


Hiking 101 will start at the Visitor Center Picnic tables just outside of the Visitor Center of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and then take the Moenkopi Trail.

Once you arrive at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, you will take a left on a cement path toward the upper parking lot and picnic tables. You will meet your Naturalist here.

You will meet the ranger at the picnic tables on the far side of this parking lot.


Make sure to bring sun protection, good hiking shoes, snacks and water (at least 2 liters).


The is a 2.1 mile (3.4 km) trail covers 220 ft of elevation gain. It travels over dirt, gravel, and rock slabs. Plan to discuss basic safety, how navigate trail systems, what supplies to bring, how to know what direction you are facing, common mistakes, and how to plan. Meet other hikers, learn about red rock, and get future hike recommendations.

This program is led by an Interpretive Naturalist that will give you helpful tips on how to get outdoors, but it is still your responsibility to make decisions that you are comfortable with.

Interpretive programs at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area are a free public service. Advance registration is required to attend this program. If you plan to enter the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive or Visitor Center between 8am and 5pm, please make a timed entry reservation at or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

When visiting Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, it is important to dress accordingly for the weather. It is recommended to wear sunscreen, appropriate footwear, bring a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water.
