MicroArt: Lichen Nature Journaling – Colors

Event Details

Have you ever wondered what the colorful crust was on the rocks in Red Rock Canyon? That crust is actually a living organism called Lichen! Join an Interpretive Naturalist on an easy trail to journal about the small wonders of Red Rock Canyon. This 4-part nature journaling event will have you look closer at the lichen that comes in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Lichen play an important role in the health of our ecosystem, so lets bring out those journals and papers to peer into a world that often is looked over.

The first 3 sessions of this program will be along a moderate-difficult trail. However, we are not expecting to hike the entire trail for this program, but please be mindful that the trail is considered moderate-difficult. The location of the trail is given once registered.

All participants are welcome to bring their own nature journals and supplies. Extra supplies will also be offered to any participants that need them. Hand lenses will also be distributed to be able to see the lichen close up. This is a 4-part nature journaling activity, but it is not required to attend every single session, but is encouraged!

Interpretive programs at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area are a free public service. Additionally, a Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive Timed Entry reservation (available at www.recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777) is required.  

When visiting Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, it is important to dress accordingly for the weather. It is recommended to wear sunscreen, appropriate footwear, bring a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water.
