One of the first shrubs to bloom in Red Rock Canyon, ashy silktassel (Garrya flavescens) produces green-gray flower tassels, reaching four to six inches in length, that appear as early as February. This shrub, growing up to 10 feet tall, can be found in washes & canyons and features many hairy oval leaves. After pollination, the female flower tassels will develop pea-sized fruits that dangle from the tree. Mule deer browse on ashy silktassel during the winter.
