Be aware of buckhorn cholla cactus (Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa) while hiking! These tall slender plants, reaching five to six feet tall, easily attach themselves to wildlife and hikers with their countless barbed spines. This is how they spread their seeds and populate the desert! If you do find yourself stuck with cholla, work a comb or stick in-between the cactus stem and your clothing and flick it away. In late spring, you can often see vibrant yellow & orange flowers growing on the ends of the cactus. Buckhorn cholla can be spotted all throughout Red Rock Canyon.
