California barrel cactus (Ferocactus cylindraceus) can be spotted along rocky hills here at Red Rock Canyon. This cactus, varying from 2-9 feet tall, is remarkably spiky with many red to yellow spines covering the exterior of the plant. Often you’ll find these plants leaning to the south. In early summer, the tops of California barrel cactus support short yet colorful yellow flowers. This cactus is one of the more adapted plants for the Mojave heat & aridity; California barrel cactus photosynthesize at night to reduce water loss and grow temporary roots during rains to soak up extra water.
