Spotted at the Visitor Center, within rocky slopes in Calico Basin, and near Willow Springs, cliffrose (Purshia stansburiana) puts on a show each spring with many beautiful cream colored flowers. This shrub, growing over 10 feet tall and featuring fibrous bark, has a dense covering of small dark green leaves. In spring, the flowers of cliffrose release a fragrant smell that can be observed while enjoying the Scenic Drive. The bark of this plant was used by Natives to create sandals, rope, blankets, skirts, diapers, and more. Teas made from the leaves helped relieve symptoms from smallpox & measles.
