Desert Paintbrush, Castilleja angustifolia, tends to be one of the first plants to bloom in spring. Often you will find this plant growing up or in other plants; it uses those host plants for structural support and steals nutrients with its roots. The bright red portion we see actually are the bracts growing over the small yellow-green flower.
