While hiking in canyons and washes, keep an eye out for Parry’s lomatium (Lomatium parryi). This plant is related to carrots & celery within the Apaceae family and roots were harvested & eaten by Native Americans. During late winter and early spring, you can see ball-like yellow flower clusters. After insect pollination, winged seeds appear. Parry’s lomatium grows low to the ground and features small leaflets. The plant gets its name from Charles Parry, the first official botanist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
