If you examine the desert floor closely, you might spot the tiny purple to rose flowers of windmills (Allionia incarnata). Watch your step though, as this plant’s stems grow like small vines trailing over the ground. Windmills are part of the four o’clock family and often are found in sandy areas of Red Rock Canyon. Look for dime-sized blooms in the spring and in late summer & early fall after monsoon rains.
