W: Wilderness Areas

Wilderness areas are special designations of land that preserves scenic & pristine areas in perpetuity. These public lands are open to visitors and allows people to escape their busy urbanized lives. Additionally, this protection helps preserve plants, animals, geologic formations, and cultural history. Allowed recreational activities include hiking, camping, rock climbing, wildlife watching, horseback riding etc. People are not allowed to mountain bike, drive Off-Highway Vehicles, build structures or roads, commercially harvest timber, minerals, or oil, or feed wildlife. Red Rock Canyon’s two Wilderness areas, Rainbow Mountain Wilderness Area and La Madre Mountain Wilderness Area, were designated as such by Congress in 2002 and offer all kinds of primitive recreation opportunities.
