During the summer, you may see Ash-throated flycatchers (Myiarchus cinerascens) flying around shrubs, yuccas, and cactus looking for flying insects to eat. This bird, about eight inches in length, features a gray to yellow chest with brown wing, tail, and head feathers. Ash-throated flycatchers prefer open areas where they can scan their surroundings for food & mates and will nest in tree holes, hollow fence posts, and other birds’ nests. These birds winter in far southern Arizona and California, making them seasonal migrants at Red Rock Canyon.
