The rocks are not the only thing that’s red at Red Rock Canyon! Male house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) feature striking red heads and chests in order to attract their gray female counterparts. These small birds primarily hang around our springs, but you can often see them by the water feature in the outdoor exhibits at the Visitor Center too. House finches are primarily seed eaters however they will eat insects & fruits if available. Their diet will actually influence the coloration on the bird; some male house finches will be more orange-reddish or yellow-reddish depending on what they’re eating!
