Throughout some of the open & flat desert environments within Red Rock Canyon, you have a chance to encounter long-nosed leopard lizards (Gambelia wislizenii). These lizards feature many black to brown spots and can reach six inches in length from head to body, with the tail being equally as long. Long-nosed leopard lizards prey on arthropods, small rodents, and even other lizards. Females have bright orange to red spots during mating season and are larger in size than males. These fast lizards escape predators with their speed and will often scurry under creosote shrubs (Larrea tridentata) and freeze to blend into the shady landscape.
