Come to Red Rock Canyon in the spring, and you have a chance of seeing painted ladies (Vanessa cardui) flying through the area feasting on wildflowers. These butterflies, averaging about two inches in wingspan, feature brown bodies with orange & black wings. The painted lady butterfly is the most widely distributed butterfly on our planet, reaching every continent except Antarctica. Look for them feeding on thistles, globemallows, and fiddleneck plants in the spring.
