Red racer snakes (Coluber flagellum piceus), otherwise known as red coachwhip snakes, are one of the more common reptiles in Red Rock Canyon. These long & skinny non-venomous snakes, normally three to six feet in length, blend in exceptionally well within orange and beige habitats making them nearly impossible to find (if still). Red racer snakes hunt primarily lizards, small mammals, and insects during the day and can be found actively moving on the hottest of summer days. Look for them along asphalt, dirt roadways, boardwalks, trails, and rocky boulders. They can even climb trees! Although they are non-venomous, they do have a painful bite so please give these animals plenty of space and do not handle them.
