Typically seen during spring and summer, the sagebrush checkerspot (Cholsyne acastus) is one of Red Rock Canyon’s medium-sized butterflies with a wingspan reaching 1.5 to 2 inches. Look for brown or black checkerspots on the upperside of the wings while white checkerspots are featured on the undersides. Sagebrush checkerspots prefer arid regions of the western United States and feed on nectar. Look for them where sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate) & rabbitbrush (Ericameria paniculata) grows within the juniper-pinyon vegetation zones at Red Rock Canyon.
