This colorful bird, the spotted towhee (Pipilo maculatus), features beady red eyes and patches of orange under the wings. Males will have a black head and wings while females will be more grayish.  Spotted towhees grow up to eight inches in length and are a medium sized member of the sparrow family (Emberizidae). Visitors often spot these birds scratching the ground looking for seeds, fruits, and insects. Look for them in the juniper-pinyon woodlands low to ground within the shrubs. They are year-round residents of Red Rock Canyon.
