If you spend any time walking through Red Rock Canyon during the late spring, summer, or early fall, you are bound to see a tiger whiptail lizard (Aspidoscelis tigris). These lizards have very long tails (typically twice as long as their bodies), spots along their sides, and pointed heads. Altogether, look for them to be about 10” in length (body and tail).  Seemingly always on the move, tiger whiptails look to eat mainly insects and spiders during the day. You can find these lizards along trails, in washes, under shrubs, and in sandy terrain, scrublands, or woodlands.
