When exploring Red Rock Canyon during the winter, keep your eyes peeled for the stunning white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) throughout the area. The bodies of these birds are mostly brown and gray, but distinguishing features include orange-yellowish beak and black and white streaks on top of the head. These fairly common small birds can be spotted near the ground and along shrubs looking for seeds. Normally you will find white-crowned sparrows feeding and flying in flocks; they’ll migrate together north into the higher elevations for the summertime.
