When walking near the Visitor Center or along one of our trails, keep your eyes out for yellow-backed spiny lizards (Scheloporus uniformis). These lizards get up to six inches long (not including the tail), feature dragon-like large scales, and have a black bar around their shoulders & neck. Yellow-backed spiny lizards hunt during the day and eat primarily insects, spiders, and scorpions. You can spot them on Joshua trees or rocks within Red Rock Canyon.
