LOCATION: VISITOR CENTER AND MOENKOPI TRAIL

DISTANCE: ONLY A PORTION OF THE TRAIL WILL BE COMPLETED

DESCRIPTION: MODERATELY EASY, SOME LOOSE GRAVEL

DAYS OFFERED: FRIDAY

This field trip is divided into two engaging 30–45 minute activities. In “Built for the Desert,” held at the Visitor Center, students take on the role of scientists to closely observe and record findings about the Desert Tortoise, using art and descriptive language to capture their observations. During the guided walk on the Moenkopi Trail, they explore the first section of the trail, making observations and connections about a variety of desert species in their natural habitat. These activities deepen students’ understanding of desert ecosystems and adaptations while fostering a meaningful connection to the desert and a sense of stewardship.

Next Generation Science Standards

2-LS4-1: Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.
